Travel Insurance – Frequently Asked Questions
What is travel insurance?
Travel insurance is a contract between the insured person and the insurer under which, in exchange for a premium, the insurer covers costs resulting from unforeseen events occurring during a trip, within the limits and conditions set out in the policy.
Is travel insurance mandatory?
In general, it is not mandatory. However, certain countries may require you proof of medical travel insurance for visa issuance or entry into their territory.
Does travel insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
As a rule, pre-existing conditions are excluded or covered only to a limited extent, depending on the policy terms. The contractual clauses must be reviewed carefully.
Is the insurance valid in Romania?
Most standard policies cover only events occurring outside the country of residence. However, there are products specifically designed for domestic travel.
What should I do in case of a medical emergency?
The insured person must immediately contact the assistance service indicated in the policy before incurring significant expenses, except in cases of major emergency.
Are sports activities covered?
Yes, but recreational sports or those considered high-risk (e.g., skiing, diving) usually require an additional coverage extension.
What is the difference between travel insurance and the European Health Insurance Card?
The European Health Insurance Card issued under the public system allows access to medically necessary healthcare services in EU countries under the conditions of the local public healthcare system. It is not sufficient on its own. Travel insurance may additionally cover repatriation, treatment in private medical facilities, trip cancellation, or lost luggage.
